Step follows step
In the journey to fulfillment
A deceptive trip
If impatient
Foot follows foot
In rhythmic motion
Could be rendered moot
Without direction
Willing steps an act complex
As is human design
Forever to perplex
Over what is divine
For step to follow step
The heart needs to will
And the heart needs help
Of motive, energy and skill
The journey is long
A choice to make
No compulsion to prolong
And force the steps to take
The step taken is forward
Only if willed
The journey has a reward
With desires held still
Step will follow step
In a fluid flow
Mind, body and spirit
In harmony will glow
Let the spirit pursue
Its goal of unity
As step follows step to
Immortality

In Step Follows Step, I have tried to reflect on the themes of perseverance, purpose, and the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. Through the repetition of “Step follows step,” I hoped to create a rhythmic anchor that mirrors the steady progression of life’s journey.
In lines like “For step to follow step / The heart needs to will” express my attempt to highlight the essential role of inner resolve in navigating life’s challenges.
The structure of the poem moves from the struggles of direction and motivation to an aspirational pursuit of harmony and unity.
In the final stanza, “Let the spirit pursue / Its goal of unity / As step follows step to / Immortality,” I drew inspiration from Emily Dickinson’s reflective tone in - Because I Could Not Stop for Death - echoing her exploration of transcendence and timeless journeys.
