Poem: Who is a friend?

Who is a friend?
-------------------

Who is a friend?
Life's bruises does he mend?
A chuckle or two does he lend?
Or perhaps
Join us in the journey we wend?
Provide a stiff spine if we were to bend?
Chide us on the mores we upend?
Maybe a friend
Is not a friend for actions to tend
Or words amend
A real friend
Can pretentions rend
And firmly let us be fr(ee till the b)i(tter) end!

Walt Whitman’s A Noiseless Patient Spider reflects the soul’s search for connection, a theme that aligns deeply with the Good Life Project, which highlights meaningful relationships as central to happiness and health. Whitman’s spider, casting its filaments into the void, mirrors the human need to reach out and create bonds, bridging isolation to form a sense of purpose and unity.

This poem, Friend extends this idea by exploring the nature of friendship as a liberating force that offers authenticity and acceptance. While Whitman focuses on the soul’s yearning for connection, Friend celebrates the transformative role of a true companion who “rends pretensions” and allows freedom to flourish.

Together, these works emphasize the essence of connection—whether through the soul’s journey, friendships, or the relationships described in the Good Life Project. Each demonstrates that bonds, built with intention and honesty, form the foundation of a fulfilling and meaningful life.
