Along the Moselle: Luxembourg, Trier & Metz

The Moselle river valley is not as well known and not as well visited as places along the Rhine.  Along the Moselle, the views are quite beautiful and it is home to many vineyards.  It flows through many cities including Metz in France, Luxembourg and Trier in Germany.  A famous commercial brand from Trier is Villeroy & Boch, makers of excellent ceramics and tableware.

Chateau Schloss above the Village of Vianden
Impossibly beautiful - a nice hike too!

Flowing through Vianden in Luxembourg

Porta Nigra, Trier
The Romans used Trier as their capital - in 30 BC!  This gate was built in 100 AD

Roman Baths, Trier
The Romans also had to take baths - and they asked for a, ahem...., 'tub'; these baths had flowing water everywhere including cold, warm and hot
'Thande Thande Paani Se, Nahana Chahiyae...!'  :-)

Metz, France
The Tour de France is making a stop in Metz this week!

The Moselle Through Metz
Metz is a hidden Gem - beautifully laid out and preserved.  Lots of investment in infrastructure right now.  'Spending German money well,' was the wry comment!

Marc Chagall
A total surprise to see Marc Chagall's glasswork in the Metz Cathedral.  Perhaps the highlight of the trip.  The second tall panel is Chagall's depiction of  Moses and God.

Notre Dame, Luxembourg
Back where we started.  We got a day pass for buses and hopped on and off random city buses and got to see various parts of this city.  The per capita income of Luxembourg at $80K is the second highest in the world! The U.S. is 6th with $48K

The 'old world' is old indeed - thousands of years of history flowing through it and for us to see and savor.  In over twenty years of visiting Europe, I have noticed a higher visibility of globalization and immigrant mix - especially in the cities.  Kabab houses and Istanbul Cafes are to be found much farther away from a major metro such as Paris.  This inter-connectedness and modern commerce does not take away the centuries of culture, cuisine and beauty that can be enjoyed - this time for us, along the Moselle.
