10 Health Tips

Both out of personal interest and for research at work, I have read these and other books on Health and Longevity.


Here are 10 Health Tips I have gleaned - not meant to be comprehensive, but those that struck me as pertinent and interesting.


1. Mitochondria

Powerhouse of the cell, producing energy through cellular respiration. Mitochondria generate ATP, the energy currency of the body, essential for cellular functions, muscle activity, and overall vitality.

Engage in regular aerobic exercise like walking or cycling.

Consume nutrient-rich foods with antioxidants (spinach, berries) to protect mitochondria.

Avoid smoking, as it damages mitochondrial function.


2. Triglycerides

A type of fat stored in the blood for energy. High levels increase risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome, while balanced levels support energy storage and metabolism.

Replace simple carbs with fiber-rich foods like whole grains and vegetables.

Incorporate omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts) into your diet.

Avoid excessive sugar or refined carbohydrate consumption.


3. Cholesterol

A fat-like substance essential for hormones, cell membranes, and digestion. Balanced cholesterol supports heart health, but high LDL cholesterol leads to plaque buildup in arteries, increasing heart disease risk.

Eat heart-healthy fats like olive oil and avocados.

Exercise regularly to boost HDL (good cholesterol).

Avoid trans fats found in processed and fried foods.


4. Iron

A mineral crucial for oxygen transport in red blood cells. Iron supports hemoglobin production, enabling oxygen delivery throughout the body, which is critical for energy, immunity, and brain function.

Consume iron-rich foods like spinach, lentils, and fortified cereals.

Pair iron with vitamin C (oranges, tomatoes) for better absorption.

Avoid excessive tea or coffee near meals, which inhibit iron absorption.


5. Hemoglobin

A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout body. Adequate hemoglobin ensures oxygen reaches tissues and organs, supporting energy production, metabolism, and overall physical well-being.

Include iron-rich foods (red meat, beans) to boost hemoglobin levels.

Maintain a balanced intake of folate and vitamin B12.

Avoid skipping meals, which can reduce red blood cell production over time.


6. Cortisol

A stress hormone regulating metabolism, immunity, and the stress response.

Cortisol helps the body respond to stress but chronic elevation disrupts metabolism, sleep, and immune function, increasing health risks.

Practice mindfulness techniques like meditation or yoga to reduce stress.

Sleep 7-9 hours nightly to regulate cortisol levels.

Avoid excessive caffeine, which spikes cortisol levels unnecessarily.


7. Serotonin

A neurotransmitter regulating mood, digestion, sleep, and overall well-being. Adequate serotonin promotes happiness, relaxation, and better digestion, while deficiencies can cause depression, anxiety, and digestive issues.

Eat foods rich in tryptophan (turkey, tofu, eggs) to boost serotonin.

Spend time in sunlight for natural serotonin production.

Avoid prolonged isolation or lack of social interaction.


8. Visceral Fat

Fat surrounding internal organs, linked to metabolic and heart disease. Excess visceral fat increases inflammation and risks of diabetes, heart disease, and hormone imbalances, affecting overall health and longevity.

Engage in regular high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

Reduce sugary food and alcohol intake.

Avoid sedentary behavior, as inactivity promotes visceral fat accumulation.


9. Telomeres

Protective caps on chromosomes, shortening with aging and stress. Telomeres protect DNA from damage; shorter telomeres accelerate aging, increase disease risk, and reduce cellular regeneration.

Engage in moderate physical activity to slow telomere shortening.

Manage stress through relaxation practices like deep breathing.

Avoid chronic stress, which accelerates telomere shortening.


10. Insulin

A hormone regulating blood sugar levels by enabling glucose absorption. Insulin ensures energy delivery and blood sugar stability, while resistance leads to diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

Eat low-glycemic-index foods like quinoa and legumes.

Exercise regularly to improve insulin sensitivity.

Avoid overeating refined carbs or sugary beverages.
