- Everything we know is being turned upside down.
What we know of, or thought of as matter, upon which we based our science and knowledge, turns out to be 4-5%. There is a 20% beyond that that is unknown matter. And another 75% unknown energy.
Here is a perfect joke that explains this situation.
There was a drunk, searching under a street light. Another guy comes and asks, what are you searching for. The drunk says, I lost my keys. The neighbor asks, did you lose them here. The drunk says no. When asked why, he says, "well, I am searching here because this is where the light is"
:-)
We have been searching where the light is, when 95% of what we are looking for is where there is no light - and we are 'drunk' with worldly matters!
- Has Eastern thought not be saying there is something out there that is not seen? Why is this dismissed as Mumbo-Jumbo (at least by the scientists)?
I would fairly definitively say that Eastern thought is NOT dismissed as mumbo-jumbo. There is great respect for the Upanishads and Buddhism in the West.
If anything, what is falling out of favor is mythology. The stories we tell ourselves such as Sun God, Wind God, Sea God etc - which is fair, Moreover what is also falling out of favor also is anthropomorphic descriptions - God as He or a She or even as human.

Whereas, the reason religion has a bad name is because it forces people to think a certain way and does not book argument (and passes the collection plate).
It is tough to argue this point, since we have what the Church has done during the Inquisition and the fate of Galileo. Even further back, Socrates was poisoned because he was saying heretical things (and spoiling the youngsters' minds).
Put it differently, when a scientist, says let me show you something surprising (eg. double slit experiment), we might be surprised, but we will learn something, and we can repeat it ourselves.
When a religious person says something, (eg, what??), it is very tough to figure out what it is that we should be learning, less repeating it ourselves.
- Having read the above, the automatic conclusion should not be, that I don't accept things that are not science.
On the contrary. Please allow me to explain.
I think as humans we are quite at sea at a loss to explain what is really happening. At the microscopic level, for example at the level of an RNA that is carrying messages around in our cells, we are seemingly gigantic, inter-galactic creatures. What does an RNA know about Jack or Jill? It is just carrying messages around in its cell.
Yet here we are, lumbering beasts carrying billions and billions of particles in us that work as a system. We don't even know or control our body. For example, you don't say "I am beating my heart" - you say "My heart is beating" - it happens. (This example is used by Alan Watts).
In a similar fashion, as we have been discussing, we are more minor than microscopic from a cosmic scale perspective.
And we are stuck in between finding both directions unfathomable.
This inspires in me - wonder, humility, awe, reverence, and a quiet determination to figure out for myself who I am, and how I belong and where I fit in the scheme of things (to the degree that it is an irrelevant question for the Universe at large is obvious, but the fact that it is relevant to me is all that counts - even though a bit of tautology is involved)
- The question then becomes what to do with this 'wonder, humility, reverence and awe'?
That is what I am working out in my own life. The approach I take is listen to everyone who has an explanation - scientist, technologist, psychologist, artist or spiritualist.
I am mature enough (now, I hope) to think that I can discern if the explanation is real, sincere and dispassionate; and wary enough to know whether a collection plate (either for money or for time) is on its way.

Stimulating write-up. While I go through all the links you send me, I have reserved some for detailed analysis later. The joke about the drunk losing his keys is originally a Sufi tale.
The night before the Physics Nobel was announced I asking why is the entropy of the universe always on the increase while its energy is presumably a constant? I gave the answer that it was because the universe hadn't stopped expanding. The next morning the Physics Nobel citation said that it was awarded for proving that the expansion of the Universe is actually accelerating!
You may have come across a Time cover story which spoke about singularity. I believe something like that is at work where our powers of observation have become so extraordinarily powerful that we are perceiving glimmers of truth. In spite of a great decline in philosophy and in contemplation, these truths will strike us even if we don't want them to because of the modern power of observation. To acknowledge an elephant standing in front of you does not take great inclination or desire!
What you have written is thought provoking. I will give my reaction without contradicting what you have stated.More than sixty years of my life in Science( in Particular - Physics) have taught me just one thing. We have lots of explanations (which are fuzzy more often than not) for 'how' but very few for 'why'. I used to say to my students , that we always say some thing as 'a fundamental phenomenon' when we know nothing about it !
I will not deal with two issues here. 1. Religion- which I think is simply a dogma which people who practice it would like to make others follow them without questions. 2. Newtonian phenomena which is simply based on observation through one of our five senses and is often repeatable exactly. It is interesting to note that the definition of 'understanding' is to reduce the ununderstandable to one of our five senses. Even the example that is quoted about the 'dark matter' is based on the 'observation' of the velocity of these supernova which are billions of light years away ! We in physics use so many 'concepts' (which may be right or wrong)to explain a phenomenon. For example ( my favorite ) is the 'inverse space' in which an electron moves when it moves through a lattice. We do not even know what an inverse space is ! also it is so surprising that in the same argument, we say that there is a forbidden gap in solids because the solution to the ' the mathematical derivation' we drummed up comes out with a cosine function and hence can not have values above and below 1 !!!. We accept it only because,a transistor actually works ! There is NO other proof for it's existence !! We can give thousands of such examples, where we simply close our eyes and do not ask any questions as long as the phenomenon 'works'. This is the reason why even Einstein's theory of relativity is being questioned now, when they have recently discovered that Neutrinos can travel faster than the speed of light. It means that NO theory is sacrosanct ! What all this means is that we we are in a small world full of uncertainties and contradictions.Yet, the mind does not keep quiet ! It keeps thinking and comes up with solutions even if it can not fully explain the cause for them. This is where in my opinion philosophy comes in.
Rather than disrespecting philosophy, almost all the great scientists without exception turned to (Eastern) philosophy at the end. Remember, Oppenheimer quoting Bhagavad Geeta ? This is NOT because even Eastern philosophy has 'answers' to every thing. But it lets you to 'freely' think ! It does not impose any restrictions to your thinking . It lets your mind dig as deep as it can to find answers to the ununderstandable. It even lets to challenge any theory and above all it does not 'tell' you how to think !!!. It lets enjoy the very journey without telling where or what the destination is.
But in my opinion, the greatest thing that is happenings to humans now is this. While they are less than a tiny spec in the cosmic entity, they are endowed with the ability to 'think' on a cosmic scale.
There are millions of more mysteries in the universe than what we have discovered so far. In fact we will never be able discover more than a few of all the the truths! There is now a proof that there may be not one universe but many universes. This poses the most fundamental question. Is there a finality to the universe ? or is it really infinity " Anoraneeya' ? who knows ? But it is amazing what the human brain is doing with so littlea data it has got !!! It is able to improve the quality of life of humans even though what is happening inside the phenomenon is notcompletely understood. It is like the magician 'God' 's black box. We do know what we put in and what comes out. But we know nothing about what happening inside the box. The journey of human brain is as extraordinary and fantastic as the mysteries of universe itself !
