Posting two references, 1 -2 Universal punch as it were. Both on the topic of the Universe and our place in it. Both by world renowned Theoretical Physicists.
One is John Deustch, the student of John Wheeler (who himself is a pitha-maha of physics having produced several nobel laureate students including the legendary Richard Feynman).
The other is Lawrence Krauss who is studying origins (including origin of the universe and origin of life and other such light hearted fare) in the desert of Arizona.
Both take an opposite tack. The former talks about the limitless possibility of the human beings due the the awakening of the enlightenment and the other talks about the absolute bleakness of the same (in his words, 'we are f@$**#d').
Amazingly erudite and scientifically sound discussions. With a bit of bashing of magical thinking thrown in.
Worth spending time with both. The first is audio and the second is video.
Hope you enjoy this:

Surprisingly, soon after this, I happened to see similar content on Discovery science, just by accident. This is fascinating and mind boggling. Here we are on the brink of disruptive philosophy. The twain shall meet. The all pervading dark matter and dark energy stare at us, challenging us to form our opinions.. and take sides as it were...
I hear the indulgent whisper of the universe..
"The choice is yours little human, Call it what you like, but IT is there undeniably"
If you have not already read it, I recommend the book by John Barrow of Cambridge University: The Book of Nothing.
Interesting, the topic of the Physics Nobel prize in lines with the link last week - must have been in the air!
This following link on dark matter - dark energy is just ridiculous to contemplate, in a 'through the looking glass' kind way.
