Seeking Resonance

I was talking to a colleague this week about how he has dramatically altered his approach to conducting his business practice.  His day was typically filled with analyzing numbers and his conversation with clients was filled with conveying numbers.  He was oblivious to the fact that many of his clients did not care about numbers, but rather cared about their lives.  Over the past year, through a series of conversations and workshops, he suddenly realized that he had to change, and told me that he is more focused on clients issues with their lives, health and family than just numbers.

He then said something quite remarkable.  Quoting an old proverb, he said, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear."  What he meant was that a couple of years ago, even if he were told to abandon the numbers approach he would have not; but that only when he was ready, the message struck him squarely enough, for him to actually change the approach to his practice.

In a funny way I experienced this throughout my career in Management Consulting which went on for nearly a decade and a half.  My very first project as a consultant was with Federal Express, the overnight shipment delivery company.  I remember, for the entire duration of the project, wherever I looked I would see FedEx trucks!  To a point where my family got sick of me pointing them out!

It occurs to me that the entire environment that envelopes us is full of messages.  Neighbors, family, friends, colleagues, pets, gardens all are full of messages.  Even inside of us - our organs, emotions, thoughts are full of messages.  But are we listening?

In high school Physics, we learned that resonance occurs when a system is able to store and easily transfer energy between two or more different storage modes.  A good example of this is pushing a kid on a swing.  If the pusher is in resonance with the frequency of the swinging, then the lightest of touch will make the swing go higher.  But if the push is given at the wrong time, it might cause a jarring effect.

Perhaps in a similar was when two are in conversation, or when a group is in conversation, if all minds are in SYNC, the thought transfer (or energy transfer as it were), between the minds will be effortless.  Not only might it be effortless, but there would be resonance as well, with the amplitude of the conversation being higher than each thought individually perhaps leading to an 'aha'

There is an old couplet in Sanskrit, which is not only my favorite, but my motto as well.  It goes like this:

mac-citta mad-gata-prana, bodhayantah parasparam |
kathayantas ca mam nityam, tusyanti ca ramanti ca ||

Translated it roughly means - Seekers get together in conversation and in advising each other, experience joy.

Thus I find myself (when not grouchy about one morning's weak coffee, or the chicken marsala not cooked just right), seeking resonance with those that I converse with.

Hoping all the while that the slightest touch, would make the swing go higher ....

Resonance is one of my favorite topics. Love your sanskrit motto!

Thought-provoking - struck a chord

Nice how your worked in the book SYNC and transferred that energy with little effort to the spiritual dimension of nature…

Resonance is indeed an extraordinary phenomenon. Without that, the world will not exist! Right from atomic level to the macroscopic level, resonance is the one which transfers energy from one entity to the other.Pardon me for bringing a little bit of physics into the discussion. For energy transfer to take place, two things must happen. The wavelength and the phase of both the giver and the receiver must coincide. The amplitude need not. If a student has to learn from a teacher, of course, their amplitudes will be very much different( not so much with the Internet era). However, if their wavelengths and the phase do not coincide, no information can be transferred from the teacher to the student. What is interesting is that such transfer need not be one on one! In a lecture for a large number of audience also, unless there is a resonance between the speaker and the audience, the lecture is a complete waste. This is a topic on which lot more can be said.

On the topic of messages, I'm able to resonate with your thoughts :-). We're getting overloaded with messages from various modes that I sometimes wonder whether we are at the threshold of evolving into multitasking 'machines'! Consider for example, on a typical work day, while you are on a conference call (at least in the field of Information Technology), tapping away on your laptop, while you feel the need to rummage through your emails to refer to a certain subject being discussed. As though we are not distracted enough, several people are trying to reach out to you through individual Lync sessions, with the earnest hope of getting your immediate response! A couple of times, I've caught myself typing in the Lync chat in the wrong window (Guess what a chaotic situation it would be). Perhaps I'm not evolved enough - but must be getting there slowly but surely!

Developing the ability to weed out the unnecessary distractions and converge towards the central point/idea; Finding out the common elements/interests among people and building upon it; Could these identify with the thoughts on seeking resonance?

Agreed! Resonance synchs and leads to mutual harmony.

I think this is my favorite one yet. Pithy and profound. Is there a better combo?

I was thinking about this writ large, i.e., mass audiences — how to “teach”/sell to many “students”/buyers/advocates at varying degrees of readiness?

An Example is 'there is nothing to fear but fear itself' by FDR - which got the message across to the whole country in flux ...

With an infinitely darker reference, having reached the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in the voluminous Rise and Fall of Third Reich, there are other effective means of persuasion.

That is a nice one - I agree with you on @resonance@. I have found many times that real 'brain storming' happens only when the minds are in sync. The result is exactly like you have said - it goes up !
